Our Event to Celebrate President Obama Executive Action a Big Success

Thank you all for joining us at the Burr Homestead in Fairfield on Sunday to celebrate President Obama’s Executive Action on common sense gun violence reform.

It was a great celebration and a chance for some stimulating and informative conversation with our Senator Richard Blumenthal.

Three things you can do keep the momentum going:

  1. Watch the President’s final State of the Union address tonight at 9:00. Governor Malloy will be seated with Michelle Obama; there will be an empty chair for victims of gun violence.
  2. Have a House Party. We can come and talk to you and your like-minded friends about how we can work together to keep us safer from gun violence.
  3. Share our tweets @cagvnews or our Facebook postings (CT Against Gun Violence).

Under Secretary Mike Lawlor and Senate President Martin Looney Speak at CAGV Hartford Area Luncheon

We were very pleased at the splendid turnout at our September 10th Hartford area luncheon at the Pond House Café in West Hartford. This was our second annual Hartford area luncheon and we were extremely gratified in seeing how our attendance continues to build. Our special thanks to CAGV Board member Sarah Raskin for her organizing skills in chairing the event as well as to the members of her committee who helped to make this a fun and informative occasion.

Under Secretary for Criminal Justice Policy and Planning Mike Lawlor and State Senate President Martin Looney gave fascinating and informative addresses on two issues prominent in the minds of gun safety advocates. Mr. Lawlor spoke on programs, such as Project Longevity, aimed at reducing gun homicides in our cities. Senator Looney addressed the very timely topic of the relationship of firearms to domestic violence and talked of current legislative proposals aimed at doing a better job protecting victims of domestic abuse. The speakers also gave frank and straightforward answers to some very provocative questions from the audience during the Q and A segment.

We are especially grateful to all of our supporters who attended and we look forward to seeing all of you again next year.

The two topics to be discussed could not be more timely and more important to our cause:

Project Longevity is a truly successful program exclusive to Connecticut in its statewide application. No one is better able to present and explain this program than our guest speaker Mike Lawlor, Under Secretary for Criminal Justice Policy and Planning, who has taken the lead in designing and implementing this program. Prior to this position, Mike was House Chair of the Judiciary Committee of the CT General Assembly and was a champion of our nation-leading gun safety laws. Project Longevity, after being initiated in 2011, has showed stunning results in reducing gun violence in our largest cities of Bridgeport, Hartford, and New Haven.

Major Cities Gun Homicides combined

Equally important is the issue of Domestic Violence. Many of you  were involved in the campaign during this session in our attempt to pass the nation’s strongest Domestic Violence Temporary Restraining Order bill. We were all disappointed that the bill did not pass in the session. We were unable to get it to the finish line in time despite the determined efforts of Senate President Martin Looney. Senator Looney will be there to discuss what happened and how we can ensure the bill’s passage in the future.

We believe it is critically important for anyone passionate about preventing gun violence in Connecticut to be up to date and aware of these two vital topics.
